The Baldwin Track & Field program began its journey in 1940, built on grit, growth, & the pursuit of greatness. But it wasn’t until the leadership of Coach Edward Helbig that the team rose to its highest heights.

Coach Helbig wasn’t just a coach—he was a cornerstone. For 49 years, he devoted himself to Baldwin High School's athletes, instilling in them the values of discipline, integrity, & relentless hard work. Under his guidance, Baldwin Track & Field didn’t just grow—it thrived.

His impact extended far beyond the finish line. As a beloved teacher, coach, mentor, & friend, he shaped generations, leaving behind a legacy of excellence & compassion.

But for all the success on the track, the team has never had a formal booster or fundraising club. For decades, Coach Helbig made it work through sheer will & devotion. And with his passing in August 2024 at the age of 72, the weight of keeping this program alive has fallen on new shoulders.

If not for the personal financial sacrifice of Coach Wright, who has dipped into his own savings to cover essentials, this team might have been reduced to a club sport—stripped of the competitive structure it deserves. And if not for Coach Setree, who ensures every regulation, form, & roster detail is handled with precision, we wouldn’t be the fully compliant varsity program we are today.
